在一起 2020

今年的情况很不一样,所以总结的写法也调整一下好了(其实就是按往年的流水帐模式好不容易整理好结果没保存,泪)。

工作

Teaching

For the first time I tried to help the weekly maths tutorial as a demonstrator. I found doing such part-time work in UK as tier 5 visa holders requires a lot preparations like Unitemps registration, NI number registration, and demonstration training, but fortunately it’s not too late to prepare these stuff after accepting the offer. The unfortunate thing was that I was forced to review the disturbing Signal Processing to prepare the excercises and the solutions, which may cost 2-3 hours each time. Due to the sudden pandemic, the last several tutorials were switched to online so we transferred to Zoom and recorded the tutorials. The second unfortunate thing was that the recorded video forced me to confront my terrible oral English which needed a lot improvement.

Research

In terms of research, the past year witnessed the necessary software tool (to be precise, a VR game) and the first published paper in the new direction I’m working on. Similar to the case of maths tutorial, the whole reaserch period was broken into 3 pieces: UK->China->UK. I completed tool programming in UK, then completed data collection in China, and finally returned to UK to experiment with the dataset when the epidemic of UK continued to worsen. This tool might be my first and only encapsulated, complete and well-documented project. The data collection was also the first time that I completed independently and participated from start to finish. The only feeling was that I fully understand how much thinking and labor (pilot study, human study) was required behind a complete dataset. Even with the help of many people, the whole process was still quite troublesome. Besides, unfamiliar concepts and teqniques in 3D graphics were huge challanges for me. Thanks to my collaborators, I could find the ideal solution much faster than working by my own.

A thought about research: It feels like building bricks. A certain brick of the predecessors may help you unexpectedly, and your own bricks may also help others unexpectedly one day.

Work From Home

The most serious challange brought by this pandemic is not protecting myself against the invisible virus, unexpectedly, but working from home while trying to keep a normal routine. I realized it after returning UK and completely defeated by it during the 3 months filled up with deadlines. Nothing seems to change much until I got overwhelmed by the pressure of one after another deadlines. The specific manifestination is that my most productive time of the day was delayed to midnight. (And the sequelae is that my anuall summary was delayed to the end of the first month of the new year.)

Fortunately, I finally found a scientific way to use my body in this new year, which is quite close to my junior high school routine:

time slot adult kid
6:30 get up + podcast get up
7:00 breakfast + diary breakfast + morning self-study
8:00 ~ 11:30 work lectures
12:00 ~ 12:30 lunch + Duolingo lunch + watch TV
1:00 ~ 1:30 take a nap + music take a nap
1:30 ~ 6:00 work lectures
6:00 ~ 6:30 dinner + social media dinner
7:30 ~ 8:00 excercise + hobbies evening self-study
10:00 go to bed + read go to bed + read
